Why are we talking about ‘soft skills’? What is wrong with ‘hard work’?Nothing is wrong with that. Simply consider the similar sound in thewords ‘HARD’ and ‘HEART’. Some things are learned the hard way, othersare learned by heart. That is what we mean with ‘soft skills’, althoughyou may feel that the learning process is quite hard at some times.
Duringyour professional education, the focus has most probably been onpractise-oriented skills, such as how to build, how to program, how tocure other people or how to write for a newspaper. Things that arefundamental and useful in getting to work in a job that fits yourprofile.
However, most likely, no one has taught you how tomanage other people, how to give presentations, how to clearly say whatyou mean, how to work pleasantly together or how to takeresponsibility for your own style of working. In other words, learninghow to deal with people is not a standard part of your education.Still, these skills are generally decisive for a person’s successfulcareer. Good education only is not enough, in the end it comes down toyour personal skills whether you will be able to put your education tothe best possible use.
